Can you enjoy your work if you don’t enjoy yourself?

No.

As a MSc Physiotherapy student and University of Regina BKin grad with an honours in Sport & Athletic Performance, I understand that the concept of active rehabilitation is constantly evolving. It’s not about leading the perfect life, but instead building towards the life you enjoy.

That’s where the practice what you preach ethos comes in. Enjoying who you are means acknowledging that consistency trumps perfection every time. Building positive lifestyle habits and encouraging enjoyable activity is what creates success, not being an infallible gym-going Terminator.

Nowhere is this ethos more present than in my experience specializing in traumatic brain injury rehab. The goal is always to do what you can, when you can, and allowing time to turn that consistent practice into measurable results.

Being human is what I’m about. Enjoy life. Have your cake, and eat it too! Working together to create long-term positive lifestyle change starts by taking things one step at a time. Once that first step happens we take another.

And then another.

Acute Sports Rehab

Moving to Glasgow, Scotland provided the opportunity to partner with Lacrosse Scotland. My work with these athletes includes the expected acute injury assessment and treatment, soft tissue manual therapy, and medium- to long-term injury management as the team trains and competes in Scotland, the UK, and through the 2023 World Championships in San Diego. A particular emphasis is placed on coordinating effective between-camp rehab as these athletes continue to train and compete with their club teams.

From 2019 to 2021 I was a member of the Vancouver Rowing Club rugby team medical staff providing acute sports rehab. This included matchday taping, bracing, and soft tissue manual therapy, touchline and on-field injury assessment and acute injury management. Outside of my matchday responsibilities I provided sports rehab and injury management throughout weekly training sessions. Frequent focuses included acute head trauma, shoulder, and lower limb injuries.

Concussion Rehab

From 2019 to 2022 I worked with British Columbia’s leading concussion management providers in multiple clinical settings to enhance the quality of concussion care available in BC. Through this time I provided interdisciplinary assessment and treatment for mild and moderate brain injury encompassing the autonomic, physiologic, visual, vestibular, oculomotor, and cognitive systems.

Most prominently, my role as Lead Kinesiologist at Advance Concussion Clinic allowed me to explore private practice interdisciplinary care while working with elite athletes, RCMP programs, and general populations.

Notable highlights and projects in concussion rehab have included:

  • Development of two distinct clinical pathways to enhance concussion care and improve client outcomes: an Initial Concussion Consultation and an Elite Sport Concussion Assessment

  • Production of an “About Concussion” client education booklet synthesizing modern best-practice concussion literature in an easily digestible format which improved clinical outcomes and increased client confidence, knowledge, and self-efficacy

  • Evolved a clinical rounds system to better facilitate high-level clinical discussion highlighting high-priority clients

  • Collaborated on a research abstract submitted to the International Brain Injury Association (2021)

Concussion Toolkit & Assessment Development

A fieldwork term at Treloar Physiotherapy Clinic allowed me to dive into a concussion management toolkit and an alternative to the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test. This project produced a series of concussion information documents for patients discussing prognosis, symptom management, and exercise guidelines. I also built a concussion toolkit for the kinesiologists at Treloar to use that detailed exercise guidelines, Return to Play/Work/Sport recommendations, and how to address concussions as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Finally, I developed a bike-based alternative to the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test. This allowed the kinesiologists to accurately develop aerobic exercise guidelines for patients that did not feel comfortable on a treadmill. This project was an overwhelming success, and it enabled a much higher degree of expertise within the clinic in regards to concussion management and treatment.

Honours in Sport & Athletic Performance

An honours thesis with the University of Regina women’s soccer team allowed an in-depth analysis of nutrition and body composition changes from pre- to post-season. Taking the opportunity to measure the physiological impact of a competitive USPORTS soccer season enabled a much more thorough analysis of pre- and intra-season training structure and nutrition education. Through this thesis I was able to provide the soccer team with valuable data regarding their training structure and current nutrition strategies, and provided recommendations for enhancing their program.

Fitness Class Design

Driven Lifestyle Group had a class delivery structure that relied on formulaic, circuit-based small group training. Moving into a larger facility provided the perfect opportunity to overhaul the way that classes were delivered at Driven, to promote a more individualized, client-focused approach. In working with Driven I was able to create 3 separate year-long macrocycle templates that could be easily adapted to each client’s ability level. These programs, built in Google Drive and broken into 12 month-long mesocycles, could be quickly customized to fit each client’s strengths, limitations, and long-term goals.

This redesign was revitalizing for Driven, and the new individualized programs helped inspire record-setting enrollment. Appropriate strength & conditioning programming and periodization is vital to the longevity and success of any fitness-oriented business, and I’m excited to continue helping the fitness community grow!
